Social Impacts of Environmental Degredation

AND HOW YOU CAN HELP

Overview

Environmental degradation causes extreme vulnerability to the societies it effects. Climate change increases the likelihood of extreme weather patterns, from droughts to floods, famine, overcrowding, infectious diseases, and loss of biodiversity. Impoverished communities are at a higher risk for these effects because of existing social dilemmas. Many lower-income countries are utilized for cheap labor to accommodate consumerism around the world, enhancing the environmental harm felt by these countries.

How You Can Help

  1. Shop sustainably – know where all your material goods come from and who/what it effects
  2. Reduce, reuse, and repurpose
  3. Educate yourself and raise awareness about the disproportionate negative impacts felt by lower income communities because of environmental harm
  4. Reduce your carbon footprint as climate change is a leading cause of many issues
  5.  Volunteer!
Georgie Badiel Foundation

The fou Georgie Badiel Foundation works spcefically to empower women by offering technical training in well operations and maintenance, as well as offering education about basic hygiene and sanitation needs.

SEED Madagascar

INNOVATION RWC has recently begun work with SEED Madagascar, a UK-based charity, that operates in the Anosy region of Madagascar. SEED manages a variety of sustainable development and conservation projects in order to build community and environmental resilience in southeast Madagascar. IRWC has contributed to SEED’s project to dramatically improve the facilities at a primary school in Beraketa, a rural Madagscan town. SEED will build three new classsrooms, sanitation facilties, reliable access to clean water, and housing for teachers. Currently, only 16% of children in the Anosy region complete primary school because of cramped and unsanitary conditions. SEED’s work will help to alleviate these issues and further education and health within the community of Beraketa.
