Our Changing Wildlife

AND HOW YOU CAN HELP

Overview

There are very few places left on this earth where humans have not placed their footprint and as we explore and expand our own habitats, we are quickly destroying the native habitats of wild species. Habitat loss stems directly from human activity, either from destruction, fragmentation from roads, developments, and dams, or degradation by polluting or introducing invasive species to ecosystems.

How You Can Help

  1. Source your food sustainably as agriculture is a leading factor for habitat loss
  2. Sharing is caring – the space we desire for our homes is already populated by wild species and we need to be conscious of this by sharing the space instead of taking it over
  3. Educating ourselves and others about the importance of biodiversity
  4. Rebuilding and restoring habitats that have been lost
  5.  Volunteer!
Protect the Krill

Work Done

IRWC has recently launched a new awarness campaign calling for the protection of Antarctic krill. Krill are a vital species in marine ecosystems and human activity is threatening their survival. Krill function as the worlds largest carbon sink, transferring atmospheric CO2 to the deep ocean where it can be sequestered for centuries. On top of that, krill play a crucial role in the marine food web. Situated in the center of the food web, krill populations have a direct impact on all other species in the Southern Ocean. Krill are under threat due to overfishing primarily for the use of krill oil as an omega-3 dietary supplements, as well as aquaculture and livestock feed. Fortunately, there is a perfect subtitute, and an even better product to be used than krill oil, algae! Algae offers the same omega-3 nutrients, but is more bioavailable than krill oil. Algae can also be sustainably sourced from farms and creates an abundance of green jobs. It is crucial that people realize the role of krill in a harmonous wildlife and how individual actions at the consumer level can have major impacts to the health of our planet.
